Orris Root Powder - Iris Florentina Linn

Origin: Hungary / Morocco / Italy

100g

SKU: A0100

What is Orris Root Powder?

Orris root, also known as (Fleur-de-Lys), is made from the dried and ground rhizomes (underground rootstocks) of certain iris plants. The most popular variety used is the Florentine iris (Iris germanica var. florentina), native to the Mediterranean region. It is sometimes called 'orris root', ‘iris root’ or ‘florentine iris root’.

Orris root use originated in ancient Greece/Rome and became centred in Florence, Italy, during medieval times, and has a long history as a fragrance ingredient.

1 tablespoon of orris root powder = 8 grams

Guide for Pot-Pourris

To every large cup of material, use 8 g of orris root powder

Uses:

1. Perfumery & fragrance

One of the most prized botanical fixatives in perfumery. It adds a violet-like, powdery, slightly woody note. Used in: Natural perfumes, Sachets, potpourri, pomanders, Scented powders and artisanal blends. It also prolongs the scent of other botanicals.

2. Cosmetic & skincare formulations

Originally used as a gentle exfoliating grain in scrubs and peeling creams. Historically used in face powders (discontinued in many places due to allergy concerns).

3. Culinary & beverage uses

Used sparingly as a flavour fixative in gin production. Occasionally appears in herbal teas with other botanicals. Also used in some North African spice blends and delicately flavours certain desserts, syrups, and alcoholic beverages.

How to Use Orris Root Powder

As a fixative in pot-pourri: Add 1–2 tablespoons per cup of dried botanicals. Orris root absorbs and slowly releases the essential oil fragrances, making your pot-pourri last significantly longer.

In natural perfumery: Use as a base note fixative in solid perfumes and dusting powders. The subtle violet-like scent adds depth and longevity to fragrance blends.

In cosmetic formulation: Incorporate into face masks, dusting powders and dry shampoo formulations. Orris root has natural skin-softening and astringent properties.

Tip: A little goes a long way. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to preserve the delicate aromatics.

Safety: For external use only. Avoid inhaling the fine powder directly. Keep away from eyes. Patch test before use in skincare formulations.
