The aromatherapy world is full of claims that range from evidence-based truth to dangerous nonsense. After 40 years in this industry, here's our honest assessment of the most common ones:
"Essential oils can cure cancer." No. Absolutely not. Some essential oils have been studied for their effects on cancer cells in laboratory settings (frankincense is the most commonly cited). But a petri dish is not a human body. Do not use essential oils as a cancer treatment. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are either ignorant or dishonest. See a doctor.
"You should ingest essential oils daily for health." No. Some oils are safe to ingest in tiny amounts in cooking (see our cooking guide). But daily ingestion of essential oils — particularly the neat drops-under-the-tongue advice promoted by certain MLM companies — is potentially harmful and not supported by evidence. Your liver has to process these concentrated compounds. Don't make its job harder for no proven benefit.
"Lavender helps you sleep." Yes. This one is well-supported by research. Lavender genuinely reduces sleep onset time and improves sleep quality. The evidence is strong. But the Lavender species used and the purity of the oil really matter.
"Tea tree cures acne." Partly true. Tea Tree has genuine antibacterial properties effective against acne-causing bacteria. Studies have shown it to be comparable to benzoyl peroxide, with fewer side effects. But "cure" is too strong — it helps manage acne, not eliminate it permanently.
"If an oil is pure, it's safe." No. Purity and safety are different things. Pure cinnamon bark oil will burn your skin. Pure pennyroyal oil can cause liver failure. Purity means the oil contains what it should — it doesn't mean it's safe to use without knowledge.
"Therapeutic grade is the highest quality." "Therapeutic grade" is a marketing term, not a regulated standard. Any company can call their oils therapeutic grade. Look for organic certification from a recognised body instead — that IS independently verified.
